Readomatic goes Open Source
Some things work, some things don’t. Here’s what works (so far): Starting a carreer as a freelancing mac developer and consultant. Travelling a lot. Political Activism. Meeting lots of interesting people and generally having a way better time then last half a year. Here’s what doesn’t work: Maintaining Readomatic and adding all the cool features while maintaining the self-set expiration dates. This is why Readomatic will go open source and I will release it under the GPL.
This is what a lot of people have asked for. I will still be actively developing and coodinating things on this project. I plan to release it in the coming days, and for that I already need the help of the “Community”: Where should I host it? Google Code? Sourceforge? Something else?
Until then, here you have a new version, without any expiration date. Enjoy!
Hm, selling as their own is not really a possibility with GPL applications. And Google has access to the source no matter where I host it. That’s why it’s Open Source ;-)
Honestly, I thought hosting it with Google is not the worst choice for a project that mostly relies on Googles services anyway.
Any other thoughts or alternatives? I don’t really like Sourceforge’s interface…
Well as someone, who bugs his users with google analytics it might be ok to use Googles tools.
But do u really think, that google gives a **** about GPL or any other license? And I wanna see a lawyer winning against google because of some ten lines of code…
is there any way to set a custom icon yet?
...das wäre sowas von großartig ;)
Nick promised to make an icon and he just announced that I will see it this weekend. So I’m as curious as you are :)
As it looks, I will release it on Google Code if no one has a better idea. And no, just saying “Google is evil” doesn’t count as a beter idea :).
I’ll do some minor code cleanup add the icon/logo as well as make a little site in the software section of this page. I hope I’ll find the time for all this during the coming week.
Yes, Gernot. Es wird spannend, gell? It will be fantastic, huh?
I really like Google Code. I used to use sourceforge for my stuff, but there are so many ads there now and the interface is really cluttered. I’m not sure where the “Google is evil” meme on this thread came from. They generally open the source of most of their new products. I don’t think there is not much room for them to exploit their customers.
I wouldn’t have thought of YOU suggesting Google Code. Don’t ya know “Google is eval”?
Honestly… Google is the worst place you can host your stuff. I guess in 2020 they sell all the collected apps as their own developments.
IMO Sourceforge is THE hoster for such projects, no question about htat.
